As someone who’s called Toronto home for nearly two years, I still haven't visited one of its most iconic landmarks—the CN Tower. This may sound surprising, but city residents often skip “touristy” spots that attract visitors from far and wide. While these landmarks hold great significance and charm, locals tend to avoid them.

This phenomenon—missing out on the gems in our own backyard—is common in many cities worldwide. However, there’s enormous potential in leveraging these landmarks to deepen residents' connection with their city.

Rethinking Local Engagement: The Concept of an Exclusive Stay

What if people could experience their city’s landmarks in a whole new way? Imagine a concept where locals are invited to stay overnight at the CN Tower—a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to enjoy the city from an unprecedented vantage point.

Picture this:

  • A private suite atop the tower, offering stunning views of the Toronto skyline

  • The tranquility of witnessing the city’s transition from dazzling sunsets to peaceful sunrises

  • Exclusive access beyond the usual visiting hours, turning the landmark into a personal retreat

  • Comforts like private room service and a cozy bath to enhance the experience

This would transform the CN Tower from a daytime tourist attraction into an extraordinary place to create lasting memories—a home away from home, just minutes from your front door.

How Can This Be Executed?

To bring such a concept to life, a portion of the upper floors could be redesigned into luxurious suites. Locals would gain access through engaging campaigns—social media contests, urban treasure hunts, or competitions—to win a night at the tower.

This approach taps into several compelling principles for audience engagement:

The Power of Extended Experiences

Think of the difference between a quick afternoon playdate and an overnight sleepover for children—the longer the experience, the deeper the connection created. Encouraging locals to spend quality time immersed in a unique setting builds stronger emotional bonds with the space and, by extension, the city.

The “Wow” Factor

Offering a rare, exclusive experience sparks enthusiasm and pride. Restricting the opportunity to residents heightens the sense of privilege and community, deepening their bond with the city’s iconic symbol.

Providing a New Perspective

Since theater’s early days, audiences have been drawn to behind-the-scenes glimpses. Businesses can create similar intrigue by showcasing what makes them special—whether it’s allowing visitors backstage, touring unique facilities, or innovatively engaging the senses, like the Lechamim bakery’s aroma-inviting glass windows.

Why Unique Local Experiences Matter for Brands

These extraordinary moments naturally generate engaging content. Participants become ambassadors, sharing their stories and photos—valuable user-generated content that boosts brand visibility.

In addition, unique events create memorable experiences that foster loyalty and strengthen connections between the audience and the brand or location.
